THE female revolution will be televised — with Foxtel supercharging its 2016 programming launch with some of Australia’s most talented leading ladies at the heart of next year’s schedule.

AACTA nominee Sigrid Thornton joined her new Wentworth co-star Danielle Cormack in celebrating the growing opportunities for female actors on the local small screen.
Thornton, who recently won acclaim as Judy Garland in Seven’s Peter Allen telemovie, will guest star as inmate, cosmetics business owner and socialite Sonia Stevens.
The special appearance marks Thornton’s return to the prison drama, after she starred in 26 episodes of the original Prisoner series playing a teenage murderer — just before her breakthrough film role in George Miller’s The Man from Snowy River.

While keeping tight-lipped about her character’s storyline, she admitted she was “confronted with the intensity of the show and it’s also quite violent at times.”
Embracing her return to TV, she said it was vibrant time for women in the industry.
“We are following a global trend that does seem to be introducing a lot more strong female characters into the mix with television,” the 56-year-old Thornton said.”

“The Danes are doing it, the Americans are doing it very well. Women of different age groups as well, and that’s a really healthy thing to see because it reflects our society as it is.”
She will continue filming her Wentworth role next week, after recently completing the production of the second season of the ABC’s thriller, The Code.

Foxtel’s drama slate next year will also include Jacki Weaver and Anna Torv leading an all-star ensemble in Secret City (Showcase channel); returning favourite A Place To Call Home (starring Marta Dusseldorp and Noni Hazlehurst); while the much-anticipated event series, The Kettering Incident, featuring Elizabeth Debicki and Matt Le Nevez is expected to air in early 2016.

Kitchen queen Donna Hay returns to Foxtel with a new series, Donna Hay — Basics to Brilliance, for LifeStyle FOOD.
Foxtel executive director of television Brian Walsh said: “Our growing commitment to producing exclusive homemade signature programming for our subscribers will continue in 2016, with more Australian original series than ever before. Our significant investment in acquisitions will also continue giving Foxtel viewers the biggest array of overseas series available in Australia.”

Universal will distribute the horror-thriller, which is being produced by Blumhouse and Chapter One

“Fringe” star Anna Torv and “Extant’s” Shree Crooks (CBS’s Extant) are set to join Frank Grillo in director Akiva Goldsman‘s horror-thriller “Stephanie,” TheWrap has learned.

Universal will distribute the genre movie, which is being produced by Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse Productions and Matt Kaplan’s Chapter One.

Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski wrote the script, which was voted to the 2012 Blood List. Blum and Kaplan are producing alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Adrienne Biddle, while Nate Matteson, Eric Robinson and Bryan Bertino will serve as executive producers.

Shree will play Stephanie, who is abandoned by her parents in their remote home where a dark supernatural force looms in the background. When her mother (Torv) and father (Grillo) return to claim her, the malevolent power spins out of control with Stephanie at the center.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Goldsman has worked with Blumhouse before, having served as an executive producer on three “Paranormal Activity” sequels. He made his feature directorial debut last year with “Winter’s Tale.”

Torv starred on “Fringe” and recently filmed an HBO pilot with Ryan Murphy. The Australian actress will soon be seen alongside Geoffrey Rush in the indie drama “The Daughter.” She’s represented by WME, Conway van Gelder Grant in the U.K. and United Management in Australia.

Crooks plays the younger version of Tessa Ferrer’s characters on Halle Berry’s CBS series “Extant,” and she’ll soon be seen in Matt Ross’ “Captain Fantastic” alongside Viggo Mortensen, Kathryn Hahn and Frank Langella. The young actress is repped by Coast to Coast Talent and Anonymous Content.

Anna’s latest project “Love is Now“! Here’s the trailer. The movie is opening today in selected theaters across Australia. Their official website is

Love is Now, starring Australian actors Eamon Farren (Chained, Red Dog, Carlotta), Claire Van Der Boom (The Square, Red Hill, ‘Hawaii Five-0’) and Anna Torv (‘The Secret Life of Us’, ‘Fringe’) will be released in Australian cinemas nationwide on 4th December 2014

Showing support for Australian filmmaking talent, HOYTS Group is partnering with Eponine’s distribution arm Eponine Entertainment to release the film nationwide, negotiated through the film’s producer Behren Schulz.

Love is Now is the intriguing yet mysterious drama chronicling a summer of love for experienced photographer Audrey (Van Der Boom) and aspiring snapper Dean (Farren). Propelled by new love and Audrey’s free spirit, the couple embarks on a formative country adventure following the NSW Harvest Trail where they discover significantly more than they ever expected along the way.

Love is Now is written and directed by first time feature director Jim Lounsbury with producing partner Behren Schulz and the experienced hand of David Lightfoot (Wolf Creek, Rogue) as Line Producer.

The film features a host of Australian talent in supporting roles including Dustin Clare (‘Spartacus’, ‘McLeod’s Daughters’), Heather Mitchell (Muriel’s Wedding, The Great Gatsby), Chris Haywood (Shine, Jindabyne), Rhys Muldoon (‘House Husbands’, ‘Rake’) and 2013 Tropfest winner Matt Hardie, as well as Polish actor Lech Mackiewicz (The Pianist, ‘Marking Time’). Love is Now is also set to a soundtrack composed by Kram (Spiderbait).

Schulz says, “We’re really proud to be bringing Love is Now to Australian cinema audiences through HOYTS. Australian independent cinema can be challenging locally, however HOYTS continues to prove that they’re a leader when it comes to promoting home-grown talent, which is really refreshing. This film is a uniquely intriguing and mysterious drama, so we’re excited to see such a wide release this Christmas. We hope that audiences put their trust in something a bit different this year and support local.”

Damian Keogh, HOYTS Group CEO comments, “We want to encourage more Australians to support Australian cinema, and they can do this by watching Australian films. We know that Australian films do well internationally but often that’s not the case at home. In support of Australian cinema, HOYTS has collaborated innovatively with Eponine Entertainment to create a model for Love is Now so that audiences will get the opportunity to see a beautiful home-grown movie during December.”

Sad new :( I was really looking for this one! Via

Somehow, Ryan Murphy’s ultra-sexy drama series is not getting made at HBO — despite starring Anna Torv, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jaimie Alexander, Michelle Monaghan, Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley.

HBO has shut the door on Open, the Glee and American Horror Story co-creator’s risque take on modern romance that was described as “a multicharacter exploration of the complex, ever evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships.”

The premium network’s programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement: “After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved. However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future.”

The decision is somewhat surprising given Murphy’s hit-making track record. In the pilot, co-written by Lauren Gussis, Torv was to play a yoga instructor in a long-term relationship with Leigh’s character, while Monaghan played a gynecologist whose marriage and sexuality come into question after an airplane bathroom fling with Torv’s yoga instructor.

Another video! Anna talks about the role and Heavenly Sword will be up for sale next week, September 2nd.

It’s been nearly seven years since the world last saw Heavenly Sword. Next Tuesday that changes with the release of a video game to film adaptation.

We have an exclusive behind the scenes trailer for Heavenly Sword featuring Fringe star Anna Torv, who is the voice actress for protagonist Nariko. In this never before seen video, Torv and two other members of the team explain who Nariko is, and what makes her a deeply interesting character. There’s also footage from the movie shown, including a fierce battle between Nariko and the forces of King Bohan. You can see the trailer above.

Heavenly Sword closely follows the narrative of 2007?s PlayStation 3 exclusive, a game that was considered one of the system’s best games at the time, selling over one million copies in eight months. Similar to the game, Nariko becomes responsible for delivering a long-guarded magical sword to its rightful owner. Along the way she must equip the legendary weapon to slay the foes that oppose her, leading to spectacular battles.

This film resembles that of the game, as it’s been a goal since the first day of production to retain the authentic look and feel of Heavenly Sword. However, it will star three new voice actors which include the previously mentioned Anna Torv (Fringe), as well as Alfred Molina (Spider-man 2) and Thomas Jane (The Mist), all three of which have extensive experience in the film industry.

Heavenly Sword will release in both physical and digital format on September 2nd, offered by retailers including Amazon and Walmart.
